This thesis focuses on the development of a method for the automated modeling of geometric models based on optical information of actual components. It is shown that geometry is an essential part of the generation of a fully functional digital twin. It represents an important part of the shadow data of an object.
Three engineering cases with increasing complexity of the reconstruction task show that geometry models can be created automatically by algorithms. It was also shown that the models can be used for downstream processes and can have a positive influence on the establishment of the Circular Economy. Particular attention was paid to the strategy of repairing components and generating asset data for refurbishment. For both R-strategies, the technical feasibility of suitable Reverse Engineering was demonstrated, and efficiency gains were made clear. It was determined that it is technically possible to automatically generate models of suitable quality, but it depends on the particular use case which type of modeling is suitable.
