Inhalt
The development of autonomous and automated vehicle systems has accelerated considerably in the past years. Highly automated driving functions have been introduced into series applications, while automatic train operation (ATO) in complex use cases, as well as unmanned aerial systems for logistics, are becoming a reality. However, the safe operation of these systems requires testing procedures that become increasingly sophisticated with growing complexity of tasks and operational domains. This gives rise to the question of whether – and to what degree – simulations and synthetic data can extend or replace real-world tests as part of “virtual validation” concepts.
To elicit the state of practice in virtual validation, as well as perceived and targeted benefits and challenges, a study was conducted by the Fraunhofer Transport Alliance in 2025 and early 2026. The study invited 29 experts from across the automotive and mobility value chain to participate in a comprehensive online survey. The results provide insight into trends and challenges for virtual validation, related applications and, in particular, the corresponding market.
